The Teatro alla Scala in Milan, often simply referred to as La Scala, is one of the most famous theaters in the world. Known as the world temple of opera, it is located in the homonymous Piazza della Scala, from which it takes its name. The name of the square, in turn, refers to that of the church of S. Maria alla Scala, built in 1381 and named in honor of the client, Regina della Scala, wife of Bernabò Visconti. The Scala season is traditionally composed of opera, ballet and classical music concerts.
The inauguration of the season is held every year in December in Sant’Ambrogio.
